Running can be great for all the reasons I listed here.  You took steps to get started and now you are looking to step up your game! Beware, there are several mistakes that new runners make.  I’ve listed a few below and how to avoid them.

Expecting too much too soon

You’re all excited!  You ran your first mile without stopping! You ran your first 5k. You can conquer the world!  Onto bigger and better goals, right?!? That’s awesome. Congratulations! Slow down on aiming for the half marathon next month. For the sake of burnout and injuries, it’s best not to increase your mileage too much.  The best way to increase your mileage is no more than 10% a week. Over-training leads to overuse injuries and can prevent you from moving forward with your goals.

Not being consistent

Running can be a challenge. That’s what motivates us, but it can also hinder us.  New runners need to be consistent.  Set a goal to run a set # of days and then stick with it.  You can’t make up for missed runs.  Running 5 days one week, 2 days the next and then 4 the following isn’t going to get you the gains you want.  It takes time and consistency to build your lungs and muscles.

Not keeping good form

Good running form prevents injuries.  Lean slightly forward, keep your hands open and don’t form a fist. Keep your shoulders down. Don’t let them start scrunching up near your ears. Keep your strides short. Keep your elbows bent at 90 degrees. Swing your arms by your side rather than across your chest.

These are just a few of the mistakes new runners make. Be mindful of these and make your running the best it can be.

Which of these mistakes have you made or want to avoid? Let me know in the comments below.
